John Deere Z930M Problems and the Solutions
You may experience a few troubles if you use the John Deere Z930M for an extended time. Here are a few frequent problems and how to solve them.
1. Engine Sputtering:
One of the most common John Deere Z930M problems is a lot of spitting, spatting, and sputtering. It is as if something was stealing a lot of power from the engine.
You need to figure out if the problem has anything to do with the PTO. As soon as the noise starts, cut the blades to see if this helps.
You can open the gas cap when the car starts sputtering to see if the vent is bad (But don’t keep the cap open for long).
The PTO clutch is what moves the blades. This electromagnetic clutch has a magnetic coil and a motor that moves it.
When you use the brake switch, the PTO engage lever, and the under-seat switch to give the PTO clutch energy, the PTO starts.
The mower blades also either won’t start or won’t stop. The solenoid or battery is may also be to blame for this issue.
First of all, find out why the John Deere Z930M lawn mower backfires or sputters. If it is the PTO, check the switches for functionality and power.
Use of a multimeter for this purpose. Examine the cables for any fractures or damage.
Replace the belts if they have breaks, wear, char, or other evident concerns. With the PTO turned off, make sure the pulley rotates freely. If not, look for debris or an obstruction in the pulley motor.
Secondly, checking the quality of the fuel is a must. With bad fuel, the engine cannot run. Replace the oil or gasoline.
Thirdly, we need to overlook the air filter of the system to check out the health. If it remains in poor condition, you must clean it with a cotton pad.
2. Bad Fuse:
If your Z930M won’t start, it’s most likely due to a faulty battery, fuse, or starter. Jump-start the battery. If the problem persists, it’s a bad fuse.
Sometimes, both the fuses for the main and stator are blown. This happens often when you use the machine after a break (about 2-3 weeks). When you start it, it does not attempt to begin working.
Use your multimeter’s DC/A test setting if it has one and set it to 13 ohms. It’s fine if your battery has a voltage of 12.5-12.9 volts. Replace it if it’s less than 10.5. If it’s under 12.5, on the other hand, charge it.
When you are sure you have a fuse problem, then put the fuse holders in line instead of bypassing these two fuse blocks.
Now check if the ignition powering. A minimum of 12 volts is required.
You don’t have to start splicing wires if it’s a new mower. Simply replace the 20 amp fuse and see how long the new one lasts before blowing. Order them from Deere to be extra cautious.
3. Blocked Fuel Filter:
One more common issue is the fuel filter getting either clogged or full of water. All hell breaks loose when this happens. This includes, the John Deere mower Z930M overheating, engine sputtering, not starting, irregular stalling or idling etc.
Unfortunately, there is nothing much you can do about fuel blocking. It is not logical to try and clean it like a blocked air vent. So replacing the fuel filter is the only way to go.
4. Electrical Coil Going Bad:
If one side of the plug isn’t firing, you may suspect this issue. The plug should look completely different. Then again, the plug would have to be gone for a long time for it to foul up badly.
You can use a meter to check the coils if you have a technical manual for your mower. Or you might test the two coils with the wires off ground to all locations and connectors to see if they test similarly.
This may provide some insight. Examine the plug wires carefully to ensure that none have come apart on the inside.
If any plug has come off, re-attach it. If any plug needs to be replaced, replace it. Call customer service and ask for a solution if you think the coil is damaged. They will conduct a diagnosis and tell you what to do.
Sometimes the battery is incapable of supplying the power. Check battery voltage as discussed above. Make sure it has the proper voltage.
5. Mower Blades Stopping Repeatedly:
If your mower blades are repeatedly turning off, the PTO clutch is probably disengaging. It may also be a belt issue
Problems with the safety switch under the seat are the most common cause of this. However, if this is a battery capacitation issue, you should also examine the battery.
If the blades turn on and then turn off quickly, it could be because they are drawing more power than the battery can give.
The seat switch may also not be working. You may need to replace the switch if it does not engage the blades when depressed.
You should never turn off your John Deere’s safety switch. They will make sure the blades don’t turn on while you’re not. This safety feature can keep you from getting hurt.
6. Transaxle Problems:
If your John Deere Z930M transmission is making a lot of noise, there’s a good chance that the transmission fluid is contaminated.
The best course of action here is to try to troubleshoot and change the fluid yourself rather than taking it to a dealer.
Make sure that the engine is turned off, the transmission key is removed, and the blades are in “disengage.” Remove the battery and unplug it. Make sure the brake is engaged.

The Tuff Torg Model TZT-13 series Hydrostatic transaxle transmission is used on the John Deere 920M. This transmission has a high risk of leaking.
It usually leaks without any visible damage. And it’s usually often the seal under the fan shaft.
Because this is a frequent problem, John Deere will usually repair it under warranty. You’ll almost always require professional assistance.
